در سال دهم هجرت، به دستور الهى آخرین سفر پیامبر صلى الله علیه و آله به مکه براى تعلیم حج و اعلام ولایت ائمه علیهم السلام آغاز شد.در این سفر بیش از یکصد و بیست هزار نفر آنحضرت را همراهى کردند که در شرایط آن زمان سابقه نداشت. براى آنکه هر گونه ابهامى از بین برود و دست منافقین از هر جهت بسته باشد، در بخش چهارم خطبه، پیامبر صلى الله علیه و آله با دستهاى مبارک بازوان امیر المؤمنین علیه السلام را گرفتند و آنحضرت را از جا بلند کردند تا حدى که پاهاى آنحضرت محاذى زانوان پیامبر صلى الله علیه و آله قرار گرفت.در این حال فرمودند: « من کنت مولاه فهذا على مولاه، اللهم وال من والاه و عاد من عاداه و انصر من نصره و اخذل من خذله » ،  « هر کس من نسبت به او از خودش صاحب اختیارتر بوده‏ام این على هم نسبت به او صاحب اختیارتر است.خدایا دوست بدار هر کس على را دوست بدارد، و دشمن بدار هر کس او را دشمن بدارد، و یارى کن هر کس او را یارى کند، و خوار کن هر کس او را خوار کند » .سپس کمال دین و تمام نعمت را با ولایت ائمه علیهم السلام اعلام فرمودند و بعد از آن خدا و ملائکه و مردم را بر ابلاغ این رسالت شاهد گرفتند. در بخش پنجم حضرت صریحا فرمودند: « هر کس از ولایت ائمه علیهم السلام سرباز زند اعمال نیکش سقوط مى‏کند و در جهنم خواهد بود » .بعد از آن شمه‏اى از فضائل امیر المؤمنین علیه السلام را متذکر شدند. سپس به امامان گمراهى که مردم را به جهنم مى‏کشانند اشاره کرده فرمودند: « من از همه آنان بیزارم » .اشاره‏اى رمزى هم به « اصحاب صحیفه ملعونه » داشتند و تصریح کردند که بعد از من مقام امامت را غصب مى‏کنند و سپس غاصبین را لعنت کردند. در بخش هشتم مطالبى اساسى درباره حضرت بقیة الله الاعظم حجة بن الحسن المهدى ارواحنا فداه فرمودند و به اوصاف و شئون خاص حضرتش اشاره کردند و آینده‏اى پر از عدل و داد به دست امام زمان عجل الله فرجه را به جهانیان مژده دادند. در بخش نهم فرمودند:پس از اتمام خطابه شما را به بیعت با خودم و سپس بیعت با على بن ابى طالب علیه السلام دعوت مى‏کنم .پشتوانه این بیعت آن است که من با خداوند بیعت کرده‏ام، و على هم با من بیعت نموده است .پس از این بیعتى که از شما مى‏گیرم از طرف خداوند و بیعت با حقتعالى است. در دهمین بخش ، حضرت درباره احکام الهى سخن گفتند که مقصود بیان چند پایه مهم عقیدتى بود :از جمله اینکه چون بیان همه حلالها و حرامها توسط من امکان ندارد با بیعتى که از شما درباره ائمه علیهم السلام مى‏گیرم بنوعى حلال و حرام را تا روز قیامت بیان کرده‏ام.دیگر اینکه بالاترین امر به معروف و نهى از منکر، تبلیغ پیام غدیر درباره امامان علیهم السلام و امر به اطاعت از ایشان و نهى از مخالفتشان است. در آخرین مرحله خطابه، بیعت لسانى انجام شد.حضرت با توجه به آن جمعیت انبوه و شرائط غیر عادى زمان و مکان و عدم امکان بیعت با دست براى همه مردم، فرمودند: « خداوند دستور داده تا قبل از بیعت با دست، از زبانهاى شما اقرار بگیرم » . سپس مطلبى را که مى‏بایست همه مردم به آن اقرار مى‏کردند تعیین کردند که خلاصه آن اطاعت از دوازده امام علیهم السلام و عهد و پیمان بر عدم تغییر و تبدیل و بر رساندن پیام غدیر به نسلهاى آینده و غائبان از غدیر بود.در ضمن بیعت با دست هم حساب مى‏شد زیرا حضرت فرمودند : « بگوئید با جان و زبان و دستمان بیعت مى‏کنیم » . بیعت عمومى Public homage
پس از اتمام خطابه پیامبر صلى الله علیه و آله، دو خیمه بر پا شد که در یکى خود آن حضرت و در دیگرى امیر المؤمنین علیه السلام، جلوس فرمودند.مردم دسته دسته وارد خیمه حضرت مى‏شدند و پس از بیعت و تبریک، در خیمه امیر المؤمنین علیه السلام حضور مى‏یافتند و با آن حضرت بیعت مى‏کردند و تبریک مى‏گفتند.
